AirAsia Baggage Policy (based on the latest information from AirAsia’s official website and related sources.

Carry-On Baggage

Allowance: Each passenger is allowed 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item (e.g., laptop bag, handbag, or small bag).

  • Dimensions:
    • Carry-on: Maximum 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in), including handles and wheels, must fit in the overhead bin.
    • Personal item: Maximum 40 x 30 x 10 cm (16 x 12 x 4 in), must fit under the seat (except for bulkhead/emergency exit seats).
  • Weight: Combined weight of both items must not exceed 7 kg (15 lbs).
  • Extra Carry-On Option: Additional carry-on (up to 7 kg) can be purchased for select flights (e.g., ~$25 USD for 14 kg total, as noted in user experiences).

Notes:

  • Strict enforcement at some airports (e.g., Kuala Lumpur KLIA2), with bags weighed before security. Oversized/overweight bags may incur a gate baggage fee (~$25 USD or 110 MYR for 3 kg over, as reported).
  • Duty-free items in sealed Security Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs) are exempt from the allowance if accompanied by proof of purchase.
  • Liquids: Containers ≤ 100 ml in a 1-liter resealable plastic bag.
  • Strollers, wheelchairs, and assistive devices are allowed free if within size/weight limits; otherwise, they must be checked.
Checked Baggage

Allowance:

  • No free checked baggage on most fares, except for domestic flights in Indonesia (up to 20 kg free) or specific fare packages (e.g., Value Pack, Premium Flex).
  • Pre-book options: 15–60 kg (route-dependent), split across multiple bags, with each bag ≤ 32 kg and 81 x 119 x 119 cm (319 in total linear dimensions).
  • Infants (under 2): 1 stroller and/or car seat free; 7 kg hand baggage for domestic India flights.

Fees:

  • Cheapest when pre-booked during initial booking; higher at check-in or airport. E.g., $400 USD reported for 14 kg overweight despite pre-booked 25 kg.
  • Excess baggage: ~Rs. 500/kg (India domestic) or varies by route (e.g., ~$25 USD for small overages at KLIA).

US Routes: Allowance based on number of bags (not weight), typically 1–2 bags pre-booked, each ≤ 23 kg (50 lbs).

Special Items
  • Sports Equipment: Bicycles, surfboards, snowboards, scuba, golf, and skiing gear accepted as checked baggage with a sports equipment fee (cheaper if pre-booked). Must be ≤ 277 cm (109 in) and securely packed.
  • Musical Instruments: Count toward allowance; oversized instruments may require an extra seat or be checked with fees.
  • Mobility Aids: Free if within limits; otherwise, checked at no extra cost
  • Pets: Not allowed in cabin or as checked baggage on most routes; check specific regulations.
Restricted/Prohibited Items
  • Prohibited: Explosives, flammables, corrosives, pork products (Malaysia), and high-intensity diving lamps.
  • Restricted: E-cigarettes allowed in carry-on only (no use onboard); lithium batteries must meet limits (≤0.3g metal or 2.7 Wh ion). CPAP/POC devices allowed with airline approval.
Additional Notes
  • Enforcement: Strict at hubs like KLIA2; inconsistent elsewhere (e.g., Thailand domestic flights may not check weights).
  • Tips: Pre-book baggage online for savings. Use baggage gauges at airports to check compliance.
  • Irregularities: Report lost/damaged baggage within 7 days at the airport.
