All Nippon Airways (ANA) Baggage Policy (based on the latest information from ANA’s official website and related sources.

Carry-On Baggage

Allowance:

  • All passengers are allowed 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item (e.g., handbag, laptop bag, briefcase, camera, umbrella). Assistive devices and outer garments (e.g., coats) do not count toward this allowance.
  • Dimensions:
    • Carry-on: Maximum 55 x 40 x 25 cm (22 x 16 x 10 in), including handles and wheels (total linear dimensions ≤ 115 cm/45 in).
    • Personal item: Must fit under the seat (no specific size limit, but typically smaller, e.g., handbag or laptop bag).
    • For domestic flights on smaller aircraft (e.g., DH8/DH2 turboprop): Maximum 45 x 35 x 20 cm (18 x 14 x 8 in).
  • Weight: Total combined weight of carry-on and personal item ≤ 10 kg (22 lbs) for all classes.

Notes:

  • Liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs): Containers ≤ 100 ml (3.4 oz) in a 1-liter resealable plastic bag. Duty-free LAGs in sealed STEBs are exempt with proof of purchase.
  • Strollers must be folded and stored in a case (provided by ANA if needed) and count as the carry-on item, not in addition to it.
  • Oversized carry-ons may cause flight delays and must be checked at the counter or gate (potential fees apply).
  • Laptops and tablets can be carried in the cabin in addition to the allowance, despite some ticket restrictions.

  • Dimensions: Each bag ≤ 158 cm (62 in) (length + width + height, including handles/wheels). Some aircraft/routes (e.g., B787-8, A320) have stricter limits (e.g., max length 250–260 cm).

  • Premium Class: 40 kg total (unlimited pieces).

Excess Baggage Fees:

  • International Flights: Fees vary by route (e.g., $50–$200 USD per piece for extra bags; $100–$200 USD for overweight bags 23–32 kg). Fees stack for multiple violations (e.g., extra piece + overweight). Pre-pay online up to 6 hours before departure for discounts.
  • Domestic Flights: Excess weight fees apply (e.g., ~$10–$20 USD per kg, varies by route). Bags > 32 kg or 203 cm require advance approval and may be rejected. Total weight > 100 kg per passenger not accepted.
  • Payments: Credit/debit card, cash, or ANA miles (for Mileage Club members).

Fee Waivers:

  • ANA Mileage Club (Diamond, Platinum, Super Flyers): +1 piece (same weight limit as fare) or +20 kg (domestic). Super Flyers’ family members also qualify.
  • Star Alliance Gold: +1 piece (same weight limit) or +20 kg (domestic).
Special Items
  • Sports Equipment: Counts toward free allowance if ≤ 292 cm (115 in) and ≤ 45 kg (100 lbs) (e.g., surfboards, bicycles, diving gear). No oversized fee within these limits. Items >292 cm (e.g., 295 cm surfboard) may be rejected or require cargo shipping.
  • Musical Instruments: Can be carry-on (within size/weight limits) or checked (counts toward allowance). Oversized instruments may require an extra seat.
  • Mobility Aids: 1 foldable manual wheelchair per flight free (cabin or cargo, size restrictions apply). Battery-powered wheelchairs require advance approval.
  • Strollers/Car Seats: Free for infants/children, not counted toward allowance.
  • Pets: Dogs allowed in cargo (domestic/international) or cabin (domestic only, up to 3 small animals like goldfish, turtles). Cold-blooded animals prohibited. Fees apply (contact ANA for details).
Restricted/Prohibited Items
  • Prohibited: Explosives, flammables, corrosives, passport/ID, cash, jewelry, electronics (e.g., laptops, cameras), fragile items, and business documents in checked baggage.
  • Restricted:
    • E-cigarettes: Carry-on only, no use/charging onboard.
    • Lithium batteries: Must meet FAA/TSA limits (≤0.3g metal or 2.7 Wh ion).
    • Firearms/ammunition: Allowed in checked baggage with prior approval, unloaded, in a locked hard case.
    • Food: Restricted in some countries (e.g., Australia bans fresh food).
  • Medical Devices: CPAP/POCs allowed with advance notice to ANA Disability Desk (provide manufacturer, model, battery type).
Additional Notes
  • Codeshare/Partner Flights: The operating airline’s baggage rules may apply (e.g., Air Japan, Thai Airways). For ANA tickets, ANA’s rules typically apply for international checked baggage, but carry-on rules vary. Check with the booking airline or agency.
  • Baggage Irregularities: Report damage/loss within 7 days at the airport or via ANA’s contact center. ANA is not liable for overpacked bags, normal wear, or fragile/valuables in checked baggage.
  • Tips: Check your e-ticket for specific allowances (use ANA’s website or app with your PNR). Pre-pay excess baggage online for savings. For domestic flights, combine allowances with travel companions to check bags under one name.
  • Enforcement: ANA is strict, especially at major hubs (e.g., HND, NRT). Anecdotal reports suggest leniency for slight overages (e.g., 17 kg overweight waived with early check-in and politeness), but compliance is advised.
