About Avelo Airlines

A Quick Overview of Avelo Airlines

Avelo Airlines is an American ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) headquartered in Houston, Texas, founded with the mission to "Inspire Travel" by offering affordable, convenient, and reliable air travel. Launched on April 8, 2021, Avelo operates a network of over 50 destinations across the United States, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, focusing on underserved routes and smaller, more convenient airports. The airline emphasizes low fares, a no-frills experience, and a customer-centric approach, positioning itself as a budget-friendly option for leisure travelers. Avelo’s slogan, “Smoother, Simpler, More Caring Travel,” reflects its commitment to operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.

History

Avelo Airlines traces its roots to Casino Express Airlines, established on July 20, 1987, which began operations in 1989 using Boeing 737-200 aircraft to serve the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, Nevada. Initially, Casino Express operated charter flights from Elko Regional Airport to various U.S. cities, later adding weekend scheduled flights to Portland, Oregon, and Seattle using McDonnell Douglas MD-80s by 1994. The airline rebranded as Xtra Airways in 2006, focusing on ad-hoc and on-demand charter services across the Americas.

In August 2018, Andrew Levy, former president of Allegiant Air and CFO of United Airlines, acquired Xtra Airways with a vision to transform it into an ultra-low-cost scheduled carrier. In February 2020, Levy formed Houston Air Holdings, Inc., raising $125 million in funding and taking delivery of its first Boeing 737-800 from GE Capital Aviation Services. Despite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline rebranded as Avelo Airlines on April 8, 2021, and launched its first scheduled flight on April 28, 2021, from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS).

Since its launch, Avelo has grown rapidly:

  • 2021: Opened its first East Coast base at Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), Connecticut, investing $1.2 million in airport upgrades and initially serving Florida destinations. By year-end, Avelo operated six Boeing 737-800s from Burbank.
  • 2022: Raised an additional $42 million, increasing its capital base to over $160 million. Expanded its New Haven base to 26 destinations by 2024.
  • 2024: Added four Boeing 737s (one 737-700, three 737-800s), opened new bases at Sonoma County Airport (STS) and Orlando-Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL), and expanded its Connecticut presence with a shared base at Bradley International Airport (BDL). Launched international scheduled flights to Cancun, Mexico, and Montego Bay, Jamaica, in November 2024.
  • 2025: Announced new bases at Charlotte’s Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (USA) and Wilmington International Airport (ILM), bringing its total to eight operational bases. Ceased service to Boise, Idaho, to reallocate aircraft for a controversial U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) charter contract.
Operations

Avelo operates a point-to-point network, avoiding competition with major carriers like Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska by serving underserved routes and smaller airports. Its strategy focuses on leisure travelers seeking affordable, nonstop flights to vacation destinations such as national parks, beach getaways, and wine regions.
