Overview
Avelo Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Houston, operates under its Contract of Carriage and applicable regulations, including U.S. Department of Transportation rules. The missed flight policy outlines options for passengers who miss their flights due to personal reasons or airline-related issues, such as delays or cancellations. Outcomes depend on the fare type, ticket conditions, and the reason for missing the flight. For flights to or from the EU, EU Regulation 261/2004 may apply. Below is a detailed guide on handling missed flights with Avelo Airlines.
Missed Flight Due to Passenger’s Responsibility
If you miss your flight due to arriving late, failing to check in on time, or lacking valid travel documents, the following applies:
- Non-Refundable Tickets: If you are marked as a no-show, the ticket value is forfeited, and the entire itinerary, including onward and return flights, is canceled. No refund is issued unless you cancel within 24 hours of booking and at least seven days before departure. Taxes and fees are non-refunded. Rebooking may be possible by purchasing a new ticket at the current fare, with no credit for the missed flight.
- AveloFlex Option: If you purchased AveloFlex during booking, you can cancel or change your flight up to 15 minutes before departure without penalty, receiving Avelo Travel Funds for the reservation amount, less the AveloFlex fee. Without AveloFlex, changes or cancellations incur a fee per traveler, and the remaining value is issued as Avelo Travel Funds, valid for one year from booking for customer-initiated changes or five years for significant disruptions.
- No-Show Policy: A no-show without prior notification results in ticket forfeiture. Avelo does not offer standby for missed flights due to passenger responsibility. Notifying Avelo before departure and canceling the reservation can preserve the ticket value as Avelo Travel Funds, subject to fees unless AveloFlex was purchased.
- 24-Hour Cancellation Policy: For tickets purchased directly from Avelo, you can cancel within 24 hours of booking for a full refund to the original payment method if booked at least seven days before departure, even for non-refunded tickets. Cancellations through the Customer Support Center incur a fee per traveler.
Note: Avelo recommends arriving 90 minutes before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. Online check-in is available 24 hours to 30 minutes before departure. Check-in counters close 40 minutes before departure, and gates close 15 minutes prior. Avelo may depart early if all checked-in passengers are onboard, and passengers not at the gate risk missing the flight with no liability to Avelo. Failure to meet these deadlines results in a no-show status.
Missed Connecting Flight Due to Airline Delays
If you miss a connecting flight due to a delay or cancellation of an Avelo-operated flight within the same booking, Avelo will assist as follows:
- Rebooking: Avelo will rebook you on the next available Avelo flight to your destination at no extra cost, in the same travel class. If no flights are available within a reasonable time, Avelo may offer to rebook you up to seven days before or after your scheduled departure date, waiving any fare difference. For overnight delays due to controllable events (e.g., mechanical issues), non-local customers may be eligible for hotel accommodations, subject to availability.
- Right to Care: For delays within Avelo’s control lasting three hours or more, Avelo provides meals and refreshments for delays of four hours or more. For overnight delays, hotel accommodations and airport transfers may be offered for non-local customers. Assistance is not guaranteed for delays beyond Avelo’s control, such as weather or air traffic control issues.
- Compensation: For EU-regulated flights delayed three hours or more at the final destination due to reasons within Avelo’s control, you may be eligible for compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004, ranging from €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, to €600 for flights over 3,500 km. Compensation is not available for extraordinary circumstances, such as weather or strikes. For non-EU flights, Avelo may offer Avelo Travel Funds as a goodwill gesture, but cash compensation is not required. No compensation is offered for delays under three hours.
- Refund Option: If a delay exceeds three hours for domestic flights or six hours for international flights, or if Avelo cancels your flight, you may request Avelo Travel Funds for the unflown portion or a refund to the original payment method. Refunds are processed within seven days for credit card purchases and up to 20 days for other methods.
Note: Avelo operates point-to-point flights with no interline agreements, so connecting flights on separate tickets or with other airlines are not protected. Avelo is not responsible for missed connections in such cases. Retain all receipts and documents for claims.
Steps to Take if You Miss a Flight
If you miss your Avelo Airlines flight, follow these steps:
- Contact Avelo Immediately: Visit an airport ticket counter or gate agent or contact the Avelo Customer Support Center. If booked through a travel agency or third-party site, contact the agency directly.
- Provide Booking Details: Have your booking reference and last name ready, available in your confirmation email or the Avelo app.
- Explore Options: For non-refunded tickets, purchase a new ticket at the current fare, as missed flights are forfeited. If AveloFlex was purchased, cancel the reservation online to receive Avelo Travel Funds, less the AveloFlex fee. For delays within Avelo’s control, request rebooking, meals, accommodations, or compensation. Manage cancellations or changes via the Manage Trips section on the Avelo website to avoid fees. For refunds within the 24-hour cancellation window, use the online refund form.
- Submit a Claim (if applicable): For delays or cancellations within Avelo’s control, file a claim through the Customer Support Center with your booking reference, boarding pass, and receipts. For EU-regulated flights, claims can be submitted within three years. Third-party services like AirHelp or SkyCop can assist with claims.
Additional Information
Policies vary by fare type and booking channel. Check the Contract of Carriage or Help Center for updates. Monitor flight status via the Avelo app or website to avoid missing check-in deadlines. Avelo does not overbook flights, reducing the risk of involuntary denied boarding. If you have checked luggage, inform the airline immediately to avoid complications with onward flights. Avelo’s baggage policy allows one free personal item per passenger, with fees for carry-on and checked bags.
