Cape Air Baggage Policy
Carry-On Baggage:
- Allowance: Each ticketed passenger is allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item (e.g., small purse, briefcase, laptop bag, camera case) free of charge, subject to space and security clearance.
- Infants: A diaper bag is permitted in addition to the adult’s allowance.
Size and Weight Restrictions:
- Carry-On Bag: Maximum dimensions are 45 linear inches (114 cm, length + width + height, approximately 22 x 14 x 9 inches / 56 x 36 x 23 cm). Must be sufficiently small and lightweight to clear airport security screening. Weight limit is typically 25 lbs (11 kg), though not always specified.
- Personal Item: Maximum dimensions are 36 linear inches (91 cm, approximately 12 x 6 x 8 inches / 30.5 x 15.2 x 20.3 cm on Tecnam Traveller aircraft). Must fit under the seat, but under-seat storage may be unavailable on Cessna 402 or Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.
Additional Notes:
- Due to small aircraft (e.g., 9-passenger Cessna 402), there is no overhead or under-seat storage on some flights. Carry-on bags may be collected before boarding and stored in the cargo compartment, available for pickup plane-side upon arrival.
- Liquids, gels, and aerosols must comply with TSA rules: containers up to 3.4 oz (100 ml) in a single, transparent, resealable 1-quart (1-liter) plastic bag. Medical liquids/gels (e.g., for diabetes) are allowed but must be declared.
- On Tecnam Traveller aircraft, under-seat storage is limited to items smaller than 12 x 6 x 8 inches (30.5 x 15.2 x 20.3 cm).
- “Smart Bags” with removable lithium batteries can be carried if batteries are removed and carried per battery rules. Non-removable lithium battery bags are not accepted.
Checked Baggage:
Allowance:
- Standard: One complimentary checked bag per ticketed passenger on select routes (e.g., direct flights to/from BNA, BIL, BOS, HPN, ORD, EWB, STL, ZYP). Additional bags (up to two) are subject to fees and space availability.
- Infants/Children: One checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 158 cm (62 inches). Strollers and car seats are free and do not count toward the allowance.
- Military Exemption: Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired military personnel, and their dependents are exempt from baggage fees with valid ID.
Size and Weight Limitations:
- Maximum weight: 50 lbs (23 kg) per bag. Maximum dimensions: 62 linear inches (158 cm, L+W+H).
- Overweight bags (51–70 lbs / 24–32 kg): Additional $25 fee per bag, each way, subject to space.
- Oversized bags (42–62 inches / 106–158 cm): $25 fee per bag, each way, subject to space.
- Bags over 70 lbs or 62 inches are not accepted and must be shipped as cargo.
- Boxes/containers (e.g., for commercial effects) are treated as excess baggage, not exceeding 50 lbs or 42 linear inches (106 cm), with standard fees applied.
Excess Baggage Fees:
- Additional Bags: $25 per bag, each way, for up to two additional bags, subject to space. Fees vary if the first flight is operated by a partner airline (e.g., JetBlue, American Airlines).
- Prepayment is not available; fees must be paid at the airport.
- Check partner airline policies for codeshare or interline flights, as their fees may apply if they operate the first leg.
Connecting Flights:
- Baggage is checked through to the final destination if booked on a single ticket with partner airlines (e.g., JetBlue, American Airlines). For separate tickets, passengers must claim and recheck baggage, allowing at least 45 minutes for connections.
Special Items (Sporting Equipment, Musical Instruments, etc.):
- Allowance: One special item (e.g., golf clubs, skis, bicycles) may be carried in lieu of a checked bag if within size (62 inches / 158 cm) and weight (50 lbs / 23 kg) limits, subject to space. Additional special items incur a $25 fee each way.
- Specific Rules:
- Bicycles, Golf Bags, Skis, etc.: Must fit in the cargo compartment; oversized items may be rejected if space is limited. Advance notification is recommended.
- Musical Instruments: Small instruments can be carried on if within carry-on size limits. Larger instruments must be checked, with fees if exceeding allowance.
- Fragile/Bulky Items: For ATR42 aircraft, fragile or bulky items may be carried in the cabin as “cabin seat baggage” with advance approval and additional charges, secured per safety procedures. Strapping items to seats is not allowed on Cessna 402 or Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.
- Non-Accepted Items: Items unsuitable for transport (e.g., due to size, weight, or hazardous nature) are not accepted. Examples include fireworks, flammable liquids, and marijuana (prohibited under federal law).
- Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs with lithium-ion batteries (up to 300 Wh) and other assistive devices are accepted free, subject to size and safety rules. Advance notification is required.
- Medical Equipment: CPAP machines can be transported as checked or carry-on items but cannot be used onboard. Personal oxygen supplies (cylinders, canned oxygen) are not permitted.
Pet Policy:
- Small pets (cats, dogs, household birds) may be transported in the cabin in a soft-sided carrier (max 18 x 14 x 8 inches / 46 x 36 x 20 cm, including pet weight). Fee: $30 per pet, each way, subject to space and advance booking.
- Pets are not accepted in the cargo hold. Assistance animals travel free with proper documentation.
Tips to Avoid Fees:
- Pack light to stay within the 25-lb (11 kg) carry-on limit and 50-lb (23 kg) checked bag limit.
- Measure bags to ensure compliance (carry-on: 45 inches / 114 cm; personal item: 36 inches / 91 cm; checked: 62 inches / 158 cm).
- Check partner airline baggage policies for codeshare or connecting flights.
- Arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in and baggage weighing, even with online check-in.
- Label all bags to prevent loss and avoid packing valuables, fragile, or perishable items in checked baggage.
- For small aircraft, use soft-sided bags to maximize space and avoid gate-checking.
Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage:
- Reporting: Report delayed or damaged baggage at the arrival airport before leaving or within 24 hours for damage claims. Complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).
- Delayed Baggage: Typically returned within 24 hours. Reasonable interim expenses may be reimbursed with preapproval and receipts. Excess or space-available baggage is not eligible for delivery.
- Claims: Submit a Customer Claim Form if baggage is not located within 5 days. Settlement is processed after 30 days if the bag remains missing.
