Central Mountain Air Baggage Policy

Carry-On Baggage:

Allowance:

  • Each fare-paying passenger is allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item (e.g., briefcase, laptop bag, diaper bag, camera case, or small backpack) without additional charges.
  • Infants (0–23 months): One diaper bag and one child restraint device (e.g., car seat) or stroller are permitted free of charge when traveling with an adult, in addition to the adult’s allowance. If a seat is purchased for the infant, regular baggage allowances apply.

Size and Weight Restrictions:

  • Carry-On Bag: Maximum dimensions are 9 x 16 x 22 inches (23 x 41 x 56 cm, approximately 47 linear inches / 114 cm, including wheels and handles). Maximum weight is 22 lbs (10 kg). Must fit in overhead bins or under the seat.
  • Personal Item: No specific dimensions are provided, but it must fit under the seat in front of you. Examples include a purse, laptop, or camera bag. Combined weight with the carry-on bag must not exceed 10 kg (22 lbs).
  • Note: Some sources indicate slightly different dimensions (e.g., 55 x 40 x 23 cm / 21 x 15 x 9 inches for cabin baggage), but the official limit is 9 x 16 x 22 inches.

Additional Notes:

  • Due to limited overhead space on smaller aircraft (e.g., Beechcraft 1900D with 18 seats), passengers on flights with 50 seats or fewer may be restricted to only one personal item onboard, with the carry-on bag placed in the cargo hold at no extra cost.
  • Oversized carry-on bags are not permitted and may cause flight delays. If bags exceed size limits, they may be checked with a fee (e.g., $100 for oversized baggage).
  • Liquids, gels, and aerosols must follow Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) rules: containers up to 100 ml (3.4 oz) in a single, transparent, resealable 1-liter plastic bag.
  • Firearms, firearm parts, ammunition, and loose cartridges are prohibited in carry-on baggage.
  • Smart bags with lithium batteries must have batteries removed and carried separately per safety regulations.
Checked Baggage:

Checked Baggage:

  • Economy Class: Two checked bags per passenger, each up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 158 cm (62 inches, L+W+H, including wheels and handles), with no additional charge. The maximum combined weight of both bags is 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • Flex and Flex+ Fares: First checked bag is complimentary; second bag incurs a fee.
  • Infants: When traveling with an adult, one child restraint device (car seat) and one stroller are checked free. If a seat is purchased for the infant, regular baggage allowances apply.
  • Military, Students, Seniors, Medical Personnel: May be eligible for special allowances with valid ID (e.g., students over 12, seniors over 60, armed forces personnel, medical personnel).

Size and Weight Limitations:

  • Maximum dimensions: 158 cm (62 inches, L+W+H, including wheels and handles).
  • Maximum weight: 23 kg (50 lbs) per bag. Bags weighing 23–32 kg (50–70 lbs) or measuring 158–292 cm (63–115 inches) are considered overweight/oversized and incur a $100 fee per direction (taxes included). Only one fee applies even if the bag is both overweight and oversized.
  • Bags over 32 kg (70 lbs) or 292 cm (115 inches) are not accepted and must be shipped as cargo.

Excess Baggage Fees:

  • First Checked Bag (Economy, if not included): $36.75–$47.25 per direction (prepaid: $36.75; at check-in: $47.25, saving $10.50 if prepaid).
  • Second Checked Bag: $57.75–$68.25 per direction (prepaid: $57.75; at check-in: $68.25).
  • Additional Bags (beyond two): $85–$100 per bag, each way, subject to space availability.
  • Overweight/Oversized Bags (23–32 kg or 158–292 cm): $100 per direction, taxes included.
  • Prepaid baggage fees (available up to 24 hours before departure) offer discounts. Fees must be paid at the airport if not prepaid.
  • Excess baggage is subject to space availability, especially on smaller aircraft with limited cargo capacity (e.g., Beechcraft 1900D). Passengers may be asked to prioritize one bag with essential items, with non-priority bags traveling on a later flight.

Connecting Flights:

  • Baggage is tagged only to Central Mountain Air destinations. For interline partners (e.g., Air Canada, WestJet), passengers may need to collect and recheck baggage at connecting airports.
Special Items (Sporting Equipment, Musical Instruments, etc.):
  • Allowance: Sporting equipment and musical instruments count toward the checked baggage allowance if within size (158 cm / 62 inches) and weight (23 kg / 50 lbs) limits.
  • Specific Rules:
    • Bicycles: $78.75 CAD per direction. Must have handlebars fixed sideways, pedals removed, and tires partially deflated. Subject to space availability and requires a signed release of liability.
    • Golf Clubs: Must be packed in a hard- or soft-sided container designed for shipping. Oversized fees are waived, but extra piece or overweight fees apply ($100 for 23–32 kg). Not liable for damage unless in a hard-sided case.
    • Hockey, Lacrosse, Football Equipment: A bag and two sticks count as one checked item. Oversized fees ($100) apply if exceeding 158 cm (62 inches).
    • Fishing Equipment: Rods, reels, and tackle boxes are accepted as checked baggage only, within standard limits.
    • Musical Instruments: Small instruments can be carried on if within 9 x 16 x 22 inches and 22 lbs. Larger instruments must be checked, with fees if exceeding allowance ($100 for oversized/overweight).
  • Non-Accepted Items: Firearms must be packed separately from ammunition (max 5 kg / 11 lbs per passenger, in manufacturer’s box or sturdy container). Prohibited items include loose ammunition, hoverboards, and hazardous materials.
  • Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs and assistive devices are carried free with advance notification. Lithium-ion batteries (up to 300 Wh) require approval.
  • Medical Equipment: Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) and CPAP machines are allowed as carry-on (not counted toward allowance) but cannot be used during taxi, takeoff, or landing. Personal oxygen cylinders are prohibited.
Pet Policy:
  • In-Cabin Pets: Small cats and dogs are allowed in the cabin if the combined weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 22 lbs (10 kg). Carrier dimensions must not exceed 17.5 x 15.5 x 8.5 inches (44 x 39 x 21 cm). Fee: $125 one-way for most destinations, $200 for travel outside Canada.
  • Checked Pets: Larger animals (up to 100 lbs / 45 kg, including carrier) can travel as checked baggage in carriers up to 36 x 26 x 28 inches (91 x 66 x 71 cm). Fees: $137.50 plus taxes for non-stop or one-connection flights, $165 plus taxes for two-connection flights.
  • Assistance Dogs: Travel free in the cabin with proper documentation and advance approval.
Tips to Avoid Fees:
  • Measure and weigh bags at home (carry-on: 9 x 16 x 22 inches, 22 lbs; checked: 158 cm, 23 kg).
  • Prepay baggage fees online up to 24 hours before departure for discounts ($36.75 vs. $47.25 for first bag, $57.75 vs. $68.25 for second).
  • Use soft-sided carry-on bags to fit limited overhead or under-seat space on small aircraft.
  • Pack essentials in one priority bag, as excess baggage may not travel on the same flight due to space constraints.
  • For interline flights (e.g., with Air Canada, WestJet), confirm the operating carrier’s baggage rules, as Central Mountain Air’s may not apply.
  • Label all bags with contact details to prevent loss.
  • Arrive 90 minutes before departure for check-in, as online check-in is not available. Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure, and boarding gates close 20 minutes prior.
Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage:
  • Reporting: Report delayed or damaged baggage at the airport within 1 hour of arrival to obtain a Baggage Irregularity Report. If leaving the airport, report in writing within 7 days.
  • Delayed Baggage: Most bags are delivered within 24 hours. Reasonable expenses (up to $25/day, max two days) may be reimbursed with preapproval and receipts. Baggage fees are refunded for delayed bags.
  • Damaged Baggage: Central Mountain Air will repair, replace, or issue a travel voucher for bags damaged in their care, excluding normal wear (e.g., nicks, scratches, zipper damage, over-packing). Baggage fees are refunded. Report at the airport with CMA tags attached.
  • Liability: Limited per the airline’s Domestic Tariff. Not liable for normal wear, manufacturing defects, or damage from over-packing/spillage.
