China Airlines Baggage Policy

Allowance:

Economy Class: One carry-on bag and one personal item (e.g., handbag, laptop bag, small backpack). Maximum weight: 7 kg (15 lbs) total.
Premium Economy and Business Class: Two carry-on bags and one personal item. Maximum weight: 7 kg (15 lbs) per bag, 14 kg (30 lbs) total.
Infants (0–23 months): One carry-on bag (7 kg / 15 lbs) and essentials like infant food. A fully collapsible stroller or portable infant trolley is allowed free of charge.

Size Restrictions:

Carry-On Bag: Maximum dimensions are 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 inches), including handles, wheels, and pockets. Must fit in overhead bins or under the seat.
Personal Item: Must fit under the seat; no specific dimensions provided, but typically smaller (e.g., 40 x 30 x 10 cm / 16 x 12 x 4 inches).
Liquids, Gels, Aerosols: Containers up to 100 ml (3.4 oz) in a single, transparent, resealable 1-liter plastic bag. Must be presented separately at security. Duty-free liquids purchased before transit in Taiwan (e.g., Taoyuan or Kaohsiung airports) may be confiscated at security checkpoints.

Additional Notes:

Carry-on bags exceeding size/weight limits may be checked into the cargo hold with excess baggage fees applied.
Sharp items (e.g., knives, scissors, tweezers) are prohibited in carry-on and must be checked. If found, they may be confiscated without airline liability.
On smaller aircraft, carry-on bags may be placed in the cargo hold due to limited cabin storage, even if within size limits.
Smart bags with lithium batteries must have batteries removed and carried separately per safety regulations.
Cabin Baggage (CBBG) for fragile/valuable items (e.g., instruments, urns) can be secured on a purchased seat if prearranged 48 hours in advance. Must not exceed 56 x 36 x 23 cm or 7 kg unless it’s an instrument, which may be placed on the floor with handles for handling.

Size and Weight Limitations:

Excess Baggage Fees (piece-concept routes):

Extra Bags: $30–$200 per bag, depending on route (e.g., $50 between Australia/New Zealand, $150–$200 for North America/Europe).
Oversized (158–203 cm): One excess baggage charge per piece.
Overweight (23–32 kg): Three times the applicable unit rate per piece.
Oversized and Excess: Two times the unit rate for bags exceeding both piece allowance and 158 cm.

Codeshare/Interline Flights:

The Most Significant Carrier’s (MSC) rules apply per IATA Resolution 302, typically the airline operating the longest leg. For Air Canada as the first carrier, two pieces (32 kg each) for Business, one piece (23 kg) for Economy apply for the entire journey.

Allowance: Items like golf bags, bicycles, and scuba gear count toward free baggage allowance if within size (158 cm / 62 inches) and weight (23–32 kg) limits. No additional charge for many sports items if within allowance.
Specific Rules:
- Golf Bags, Skis, etc.: Accepted as checked baggage; oversized/overweight items incur fees. Scuba tanks must be empty.
- Bicycles: Must be packed in a bike box; fees apply if exceeding allowance.
- Musical Instruments: Small instruments can be carry-on if within 56 x 36 x 23 cm and 7 kg. Larger instruments must be checked or booked as CBBG with advance approval.
- Fragile/Valuable Items: Can be booked as CBBG on a purchased seat; contact China Airlines 48 hours in advance.
Non-Accepted Items: Hoverboards, knives, scissors, firearms (unless packed separately with ammunition), and illegal wildlife are prohibited in carry-on or checked baggage.
Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs and assistive devices are carried free with advance notification. Lithium batteries up to 300 Wh permitted.
Medical Equipment: CPAP machines allowed as carry-on (must be off during taxi, takeoff, landing); personal oxygen cylinders are prohibited.

Small pets (dogs, cats, birds) can travel in the cabin (carrier max 55 x 40 x 23 cm, 8 kg total) or cargo hold for $150–$300, depending on route. Advance booking and health documentation required. Assistance animals travel free with proper documentation.
