About Condor Airlines

A Quick Overview of Condor Airlines

Condor Flugdienst GmbH, branded as Condor (IATA: DE), is a German leisure airline headquartered in Neu-Isenburg, Hesse, with its main base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Established on December 21, 1955, as Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH, Condor began operations on March 29, 1956, and has since grown into one of the world’s leading leisure airlines, serving over 9 million passengers annually to approximately 100 destinations across Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Known for its colorful striped livery and focus on affordable holiday travel, Condor operates medium-haul flights from multiple German airports and Zurich, and long-haul flights primarily from Frankfurt, with additional services from Munich and Düsseldorf. A Skytrax 4-Star Leisure Airline, Condor offers three cabin classes—Economy, Premium Economy, and Business—with modern amenities like lie-flat seats and 4K entertainment on its new Airbus A330neo fleet. Following its independence from the Thomas Cook Group in 2019 and acquisition by Attestor Capital in 2023, Condor continues to expand its network, emphasizing safety, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.

History

Condor was founded in 1955 as Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH, launching its first tourist-oriented flight in 1956 with Vickers Viscount aircraft. In 1961, it merged with rival Condor-Luftreederei (founded 1957 by Oetker), adopting the Condor Flugdienst name. Lufthansa acquired full ownership by 1960, and Condor became Germany’s leading leisure airline, with a 63.3% market share by 1962. Long-haul flights began in 1966, reaching Thailand, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and the Dominican Republic.
