Copa Airlines Baggage Policy

Carry-On Baggage:

Allowance:

  • All passengers can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item (e.g., laptop bag, small backpack, purse) free of charge.
  • Infants (0–23 months): One carry-on bag (up to 10 kg / 22 lbs) for essentials, plus a collapsible stroller, car seat, or diaper bag, subject to size restrictions and space availability.

Size and Weight Restrictions:

  • Carry-On Bag: Maximum dimensions are 56 x 36 x 25 cm (22 x 14 x 10 inches, approximately 46 linear inches / 118 cm, including handles and wheels). Maximum weight is 10 kg (22 lbs). Must fit in overhead bins.
  • Personal Item: Maximum dimensions are 43 x 25 x 22 cm (17 x 10 x 9 inches). Must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Liquids, Gels, Aerosols: Containers up to 100 ml (3.4 oz) in a single, transparent, resealable 1-liter plastic bag, presented separately at security.

Additional Notes:

  • Enforcement of carry-on weight limits (10 kg) may vary. Some passengers report leniency if bags don’t appear oversized, but check-in staff may weigh bags and attach an approval tag, especially for Latin American routes. Overweight or oversized bags may incur a gate baggage fee (e.g., $100) or be checked into the cargo hold.
  • On smaller aircraft, carry-on bags may be stowed in the cargo hold due to limited cabin space, retrievable plane-side upon arrival.
  • Prohibited items in carry-on include sharp objects (e.g., knives, scissors) and lithium-ion battery devices like handheld fans (can be checked). Power banks (100–160 Wh) are allowed in carry-on only, not for in-flight use.
  • Smart bags with lithium batteries must have batteries removed and carried separately per safety regulations.
  • Small musical instruments can be carried on if within size/weight limits; larger instruments may require a purchased seat (Cabin Baggage, CBBG) with advance approval.
Checked Baggage:

Size and Weight Limitations:

  • Maximum dimensions: 158 cm (62 inches, L+W+H, including wheels and handles). Wheels are not included in linear measurements.
  • Maximum weight: 23 kg (50 lbs) for Economy, 32 kg (70 lbs) for Business. Bags weighing 33–45 kg (71–100 lbs) or measuring 158–272 cm (62–107 inches) may be accepted with fees, subject to space. Bags over 45 kg (100 lbs) or 272 cm (107 inches) are not accepted and must be shipped as cargo.
  • Exceptions: For flights to/from the Bahamas and Cuba, maximum weight is 32 kg (70 lbs) per bag; oversized fees apply for bags over 158 cm.

Excess Baggage Fees (piece-concept routes, approximate, one-way):

  • Extra Bags: $40–$175 per bag, depending on route (e.g., $40 for domestic Panama, $175 for additional bags beyond two). Up to five bags total allowed (free allowance + extra).
  • Oversized (158–272 cm / 62–107 inches): $100 per bag.
  • Prepaid baggage (24–3 hours before departure via online check-in) offers up to 20% discount. Fees are cumulative (e.g., a bag that is both overweight and oversized incurs multiple charges).
  • Weight-Concept Routes: Excess fees are $10–$50 per kg, depending on the zone.
Special Items (Sporting Equipment, Musical Instruments, etc.):
  • Allowance: Items like bicycles, golf bags, skis, and scuba gear count toward the checked baggage allowance if within size (158 cm / 62 inches) and weight (23–32 kg) limits.
  • Specific Rules:
    • Bicycles, Skiing Equipment, Pole Vaults, Windsurf Equipment: $100 per item, one-way, if exceeding allowance. Bicycles must be packed with handlebars fixed and tires deflated.
    • Surfboards/Bodyboards: $30 (domestic Panama), $75 (flights to/from Panama City, US, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua), $100 (other international flights). Maximum two boards per bag.
    • Scuba/Diving Equipment: Not part of free allowance; $100 for two pieces (empty tank + gear bag). Tanks must be empty.
    • Firearms: $50 to permitted destinations, packed separately from ammunition (max 5 kg / 11 lbs).
    • Musical Instruments: Small instruments can be carry-on if within 56 x 36 x 25 cm and 10 kg. Larger instruments must be checked or booked as CBBG with a purchased seat, subject to approval.
  • Non-Accepted Items: Gliders, canoes, boats, kayaks (except inflatable), jet skis, surf skis, and bags over 45 kg or 272 cm are not accepted.
  • Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs and assistive devices are carried free with advance notification. Lithium-ion batteries (up to 300 Wh) require approval.
  • Medical Equipment: FAA-approved portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) are allowed as carry-on and can be used onboard with advance notice. Liquid oxygen devices are prohibited.
Pet Policy:
  • Small dogs and cats are allowed in the cabin in a carrier (max 43 x 31 x 20 cm, 10 kg including pet). Fee: $75–$125, depending on route.
  • Small birds are permitted on domestic Colombia flights only. No birds are allowed on international flights or domestic Panama flights.
  • Larger pets can travel in the cargo hold; fees vary by route. Advance booking and health documentation are required.
  • Assistance dogs travel free in the cabin with proper documentation and prior approval.
Tips to Avoid Fees:
  • Check bag dimensions (carry-on: 56 x 36 x 25 cm, 10 kg; personal item: 43 x 25 x 22 cm; checked: 158 cm, 23–32 kg) and weigh bags at home.
  • Prepay excess baggage online (24–3 hours before departure) for up to 20% savings.
  • Use soft-sided carry-on bags to fit overhead bins or under seats.
  • Pack valuables and essentials in your personal item to avoid issues if carry-on is checked.
  • For codeshare flights (e.g., with United Airlines), the Marketing Carrier’s rules apply for US departures/arrivals; otherwise, the Most Significant Carrier’s rules apply. Check the operating airline’s policy.
  • Label all bags with contact details to prevent loss.
  • Arrive early: Check-in closes 60 minutes before departure, and bags cannot be checked more than 4 hours (international) or 6 hours (domestic Colombia) before departure.
Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage:
  • Report issues at the airport immediately to obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Claims for damaged baggage must be filed within 7 days, delayed baggage within 21 days.
  • Use Copa’s online baggage tracing system with the PIR number.
  • Liability is limited per international conventions; Copa is not responsible for normal wear or TSA-related damage.
