Delta Airlines Baggage Policy

Carry-On Baggage:

Allowance:

  • All passengers (including Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Delta Comfort+, Delta Premium Select, Delta One, First Class): One carry-on bag and one personal item (e.g., purse, laptop bag, small backpack) free of charge.
  • Infants (under 2 years, no seat): No carry-on allowance, but one diaper bag, breast pump with cooler bag, or soft-sided bassinet is permitted free, plus one collapsible stroller or car seat (gate-checked or carried onboard if space allows).
  • Children (2–11 years): Same allowance as adults.

Size and Weight Restrictions:

  • Carry-On Bag: Maximum dimensions 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm, including handles and wheels, total 45 linear inches / 114 cm). Must fit in overhead bins or under the seat.
  • Personal Item: No specific dimensions, but must fit under the seat in front of you (e.g., 17 x 13 x 9 inches / 43 x 33 x 23 cm or smaller recommended).
  • Weight: No weight limit for most routes, except at select international airports (e.g., Beijing, Singapore, Shanghai: 15–22 lbs / 7–10 kg).
  • Liquids, Gels, Aerosols: Containers up to 3.4 oz (100 ml) in a single, transparent, resealable 1-quart plastic bag, per TSA/EU/UK regulations. Duty-free liquids in sealed tamper-evident bags (STEBs) are allowed with proof of purchase. Beverages purchased post-security are exempt from liquid restrictions.
Additional Notes:
  • Delta Connection Flights (50 seats or less): Only one personal item is permitted onboard due to limited overhead space; carry-on bags are gate-checked free with a pink Gate Claim/Planeside tag and returned upon deplaning.
  • Oversized carry-on bags may be gate-checked with fees ($85–$95, depending on itinerary, if exceeding checked baggage allowance).
  • Prohibited items include aerosols (e.g., cooking spray), sharp objects (e.g., knives, scissors), and self-balancing devices (e.g., hoverboards). Smart bags require removable lithium batteries carried separately.
  • Small musical instruments (within 22 x 14 x 9 inches) can replace carry-on; larger ones may require a purchased seat or be checked.
  • Additional permitted items: Umbrellas, coats, books, food, pillows, child seats, or bassinets (if space allows).
  • Flight attendants cannot assist with placing carry-on bags in overhead bins, except for passengers with disabilities.
Special Items (Sporting Equipment, Musical Instruments, etc.):
  • Allowance: Items like golf bags, skis, and bicycles count toward the free baggage allowance if within weight (50–70 lbs, depending on class) and size (62 linear inches) limits.
  • Non-Accepted Items: Bags over 100 lbs (45 kg) or 80 linear inches (203 cm), Christmas trees to Hawaii (must pass agricultural inspection), and certain hazardous items (e.g., hoverboards).
  • Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs, crutches, and canes are free with advance notification. Flexible canes can be stowed under seats if they don’t protrude.
  • Medical Equipment: Portable oxygen concentrators and CPAP machines are allowed as carry-on (not used during taxi, takeoff, landing) with advance approval.
  • Christmas Trees: Allowed within the U.S. (including Hawaii) as checked baggage, adequately packaged, subject to standard fees and agricultural inspection for Hawaii.
Pet Policy:
  • Small dogs, cats, and household birds can travel in the cabin (max 8 kg including carrier, fits under the seat, counts as one carry-on item). Fees: $95 (U.S./Canada/Puerto Rico), $200 (international, except Brazil: $150).
  • Larger pets travel in the cargo hold; fees vary by route. Advance booking required.
  • Assistance dogs travel free in the cabin with documentation.
Tips to Avoid Fees:
  • Prepay baggage fees online (24 hours before departure) or use 3,000 SkyMiles for the first bag (domestic).
  • Measure bags (carry-on: 22 x 14 x 9 inches; checked: 62 linear inches) and weigh them (50–70 lbs) at home using a digital luggage scale.
  • Use lightweight luggage and roll clothes to save space. Wear heavy items (e.g., jackets, boots) to reduce bag weight.
  • Leverage Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards or Medallion/SkyTeam Elite status for free checked bags.
  • For codeshares (e.g., Air France, KLM), confirm the MSC’s rules, as they may differ.
  • Label bags with contact details inside and out.
  • Arrive early: 2 hours for domestic flights, 3 hours for international, to meet the 45-minute domestic baggage drop-off deadline. Online check-in (24 hours to 1 hour before departure) via delta.com or Fly Delta app saves time.
Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage:
  • Report issues at the airport’s Baggage Service Office for a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Report damage within 7 days (24 hours for domestic), delays within 21 days
  • Delta’s 20-Minute Bag Guarantee ensures the first checked bag is at baggage claim within 20 minutes of arrival, or you receive 2,500 SkyMiles (domestic flights only).
  • For delays over 24 hours outside your residence, essential purchases (e.g., toiletries) may be reimbursed up to €40/day (max €250) with receipts.
  • Delta is not liable for fragile items, electronics, jewelry, or perishables in checked baggage. Carry valuables in carry-on.
