EasyJet Airline Company Limited, founded in 1995 by Greek-Cypriot entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou, is one of Europe’s leading low-cost, point-to-point airlines, headquartered at London Luton Airport (LTN), Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. Operating under the slogan “Making travel easy and affordable,” EasyJet is the UK’s largest airline by passenger numbers, carrying over 100 million passengers annually across 1,207 routes in 38 countries and 164 airports as of 2025. With a fleet of 355 Airbus aircraft, EasyJet connects major European cities, North Africa, and the Middle East, offering low fares through operational efficiency and a no-frills model. The airline is part of the EasyGroup conglomerate and holds a strong market position, ranking as the top carrier at airports like London Gatwick, Bristol, Edinburgh, and Geneva, and second at London Stansted, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Amsterdam Schiphol.
EasyJet was established to fill a gap in the European aviation market, inspired by the low-cost model of Southwest Airlines in the U.S. Stelios Haji-Ioannou secured a £5 million loan from his father to launch the airline, starting with two leased Boeing 737-200s flying from Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The airline’s bright orange livery and direct booking system, initially via telephone, set it apart. In 1997, EasyJet trialed a website for direct bookings, pioneering web-based ticket sales in Europe. By 2002, the airline went public on the London Stock Exchange, fueling expansion through acquisitions like Go Fly, a former British Airways subsidiary.
The 2000s saw rapid growth, with EasyJet transitioning to an all-Airbus fleet, starting with A319s and later A320s. In 2013, the airline introduced mobile boarding passes, and by 2015, it embraced artificial intelligence and big data to enhance efficiency and customer experience. The launch of “Worldwide by EasyJet” in 2017, in partnership with Dohop, enabled seamless connections with long-haul carriers like Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, expanding access to destinations like New York and Hong Kong. During the COVID-19 pandemic, EasyJet grounded its fleet for three months in 2020 but resumed operations with enhanced safety measures, including repatriation flights. In 2022, EasyJet ordered 56 A320neo and 18 A321neo aircraft, followed by a 2023 order for 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo, reinforcing its commitment to fleet modernization.
EasyJet operates a modern fleet of 355 Airbus aircraft, including A319s, A320s, A320neo, and A321neo models, with the latter known for fuel efficiency. The airline’s network spans over 1,000 routes, serving primary airports like London Gatwick (100+ destinations), Milan Malpensa, and Paris Charles de Gaulle. In March 2026, EasyJet will open a new three-aircraft base at Newcastle International Airport, expanding its UK presence. The “Worldwide by EasyJet” program, launched in 2017, allows connections through hubs like Gatwick, Milan, and Amsterdam, partnering with 17 airlines, including Cathay Pacific and Etihad, to offer long-haul options. EasyJet’s operations prioritize quick turnarounds and cost efficiency, with no free onboard amenities, aligning with its low-cost model.
