Eurowings GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, is Germany’s largest low-cost airline, headquartered in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded on February 1, 1990, through the merger of Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD) and Reise- und Industrieflug (RFG), Eurowings has evolved from a regional carrier into a leading value airline, serving over 150 destinations across 50 countries in Europe, North Africa, and select long-haul routes. With a fleet of 108 Airbus A320-family aircraft, Eurowings operates from 11 bases, including major hubs in Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Hamburg, and its Maltese subsidiary, Eurowings Europe, supports additional bases in Vienna, Prague, and Palma de Mallorca. Awarded a Skytrax Four-Star rating in 2024, Eurowings is celebrated for its generous seat pitch and flexible fare options, catering to both leisure and business travelers with affordable, customizable travel experiences.
Eurowings began operations on January 1, 1994, using ATR 42 and 72 aircraft inherited from its predecessor companies. Initially a regional airline under Lufthansa Regional, it operated feeder flights for Lufthansa until October 2014, when it began transitioning into a low-cost carrier. In 2015, Eurowings underwent a significant transformation, absorbing routes from its sister brand Germanwings and adopting a new livery with its first Airbus A320-200 delivery. By October 2015, Eurowings fully integrated Germanwings’ route network, consolidating Lufthansa’s low-cost operations under a single brand.
The airline briefly ventured into long-haul flights in November 2015, operated by SunExpress Deutschland from Cologne/Bonn to destinations like the Caribbean and Thailand, but faced challenges with delays averaging 5.8 hours due to a small fleet and technical issues. By June 2019, Eurowings discontinued long-haul services, transferring them to Discover Airlines (formerly Eurowings Discover), a Lufthansa Group leisure carrier launched in July 2021. This allowed Eurowings to focus on short- and medium-haul routes using Airbus A320-family aircraft.
In 2016, Eurowings expanded with a second Austrian base in Salzburg and, in 2021, opened a base in Prague, enhancing its European network. In November 2022, Eurowings Europe transitioned from Austrian to Maltese registration to reduce operational costs and taxes. In 2023, Eurowings wet-leased two Airbus A340-300s from Edelweiss Air for summer operations, addressing high demand. In 2025, the airline announced new bases in Nuremberg and Tbilisi, Georgia, and introduced “Premium BIZ Seats” for longer medium-haul routes, offering wider seats, more pitch, priority boarding, lounge access, and complimentary meals on select Airbus A320neo flights starting autumn 2025.
Eurowings operates a modern fleet of 108 Airbus A319, A320, A320neo, A321, and A321neo aircraft, with an average age of 10 years. The A320neo, equipped with LEAP engines and sharklet wingtips, reduces fuel consumption by 20% and CO2 emissions by 3,700 tonnes per aircraft annually, making it the most efficient in its class. The A321neo offers the longest range and a spacious Airspace Cabin with flexible lighting and larger overhead bins for enhanced passenger comfort. Eurowings deploys additional aircraft from partner airlines like Air Baltic and Avion Express during peak seasons to ensure operational reliability.
The airline’s network spans 1,207 routes, with key bases in Düsseldorf (market leader), Cologne/Bonn, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and Palma de Mallorca. Popular destinations include Barcelona, Milan, Majorca, the Canary Islands, and Tel Aviv, with new routes to Tbilisi, Georgia, and Dubai added in 2025. Eurowings’ codeshare agreements with Lufthansa, United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and others enhance connectivity, while its “Worldwide by Eurowings” program facilitates long-haul connections via partners like Discover Airlines. The airline operates 117 weekly flights from Düsseldorf and 80 from Stuttgart, with fares starting at £29 for European routes.
