Overview
Interjet Airlines ceased operations in December 2020 and was declared bankrupt in April 2023. The following information reflects the flight change policy as it existed prior to the airline’s closure, based on available data. Passengers with existing claims or credits should contact relevant authorities or their booking agent for assistance, as Interjet’s services are no longer operational.
Interjet allowed passengers to modify flight bookings, including changes to dates, times, routes, or passenger names, subject to fare rules and availability. Changes needed to be made before departure to avoid no-show penalties, which could result in loss of ticket value. Fees and fare differences applied based on fare type and timing.
Key Conditions
- Changes were permitted for tickets purchased through Interjet’s website, mobile app, call center, ticket offices, or authorized travel agents. Tickets booked through third parties were subject to the agent’s policies.
- Modifications to codeshare or interline flights were governed by the operating airline’s policies.
- Changes needed to be made before the check-in deadline, typically a short time before departure.
- Name changes were allowed for the entire trip, enabling ticket transfers to another person, with fees varying by fare type and timing.
- Changes to departure or destination airports were permitted, subject to fees and fare differences.
24-Hour Change Policy
Passengers could change or cancel their booking within one day of purchase without a fee, provided the flight was at least a week away and booked directly through Interjet. This applied to most fare types, except certain promotional tickets. Fare differences could apply if the new flight was more expensive.
Fare Type Policies
- Light: Changes were allowed with a fee, plus fare differences if the new flight was more expensive. Tickets were non-refundable.
- Optima: Changes were allowed with a lower fee than Light fares, plus fare differences if applicable. Tickets were non-refundable but included additional baggage allowances.
- Priority: No change fees for unlimited changes on the same fare, with fare differences if the new flight was more expensive. Tickets were non-refundable.
Change Fees
- Fees for Light and Optima fares varied by route (domestic or international) and timing, with higher fees closer to departure.
- Name changes incurred a fee per segment, with costs depending on fare type and timing.
- Fare differences were charged if the new flight was more expensive; no refund or credit was issued if the new fare was lower.
- Priority fare passengers could change flights without fees, provided the same fare class was available.
- Fees could be waived for changes due to passenger illness, with appropriate documentation.
How to Change a Flight
Passengers could modify their bookings through the following methods when Interjet was operational:
- Online: Access the booking management section on the Interjet website or mobile app, enter the booking reference and last name, select new flight details, and pay any fees or fare differences. Name changes could be made online up to a few hours before departure.
- Customer Service: Contact the Interjet call center, provide booking details and change reasons, and pay applicable fees. A service charge could apply for agent-assisted changes.
- In-Person: Visit an Interjet ticket counter or airport office to process changes, subject to availability and fees.
- Travel Agency: If booked through a third party, contact the agency to manage changes, which could involve additional fees.
Flight Disruptions
- For cancellations or significant schedule changes, Interjet would rebook passengers on the next available flight at no additional cost or offer a refund or travel voucher, depending on fare rules.
- Under EU Regulation EC 261, passengers on flights departing from EU airports could claim compensation for delays or cancellations, unless caused by extraordinary circumstances like weather or air traffic control issues.
- Passengers were notified of disruptions via SMS or email if contact information was provided.
Additional Notes
- Passengers were advised to review fare rules at booking to understand change restrictions and costs.
- Travel vouchers issued for changes were valid for one year, non-transferable, and applicable only to Interjet flights when operational.
- Due to Interjet’s bankruptcy, passengers with unused tickets or vouchers may need to file claims with entities like the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund for purchases made through registered Ontario agencies, subject to deadlines and conditions.
- Changes to bookings through third-party agencies could incur additional fees imposed by the agency.
