Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A. (ITA Airways), operating as ITA Airways, is Italy’s flag carrier, established in 2020 as the successor to Alitalia, which ceased operations in October 2021 after years of financial struggles. Fully owned by the Italian government through the Ministry of Economy and Finance and partially by the Lufthansa Group, ITA Airways is headquartered in Rome, with its main hub at Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) and a secondary hub at Milan Linate Airport (LIN). The airline was created to provide a leaner, more efficient operation, focusing on a modern fleet, premium passenger experiences, and celebrating Italian culture. As of November 2024, ITA Airways serves over 70 destinations across Italy, Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, with plans to expand to 74 destinations and 89 routes by 2025.
ITA Airways was born out of Alitalia’s collapse, which faced bankruptcy in 2017 and was nationalized in 2020. Launched on October 15, 2021, ITA Airways inherited 49 aircraft from Alitalia, including 18 Airbus A319-100s, 25 Airbus A320-200s, and 6 Airbus A330-200s, supplemented by three additional aircraft already under its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The airline acquired the Alitalia brand for €90 million to preserve its legacy for potential future marketing and to prevent competitors from using it. In October 2023, ITA Airways sued competitor AeroItalia over branding similarities, and in September 2024, it adopted the tagline “inspired by Alitalia.”
In 2022, MSC Group and Lufthansa Group expressed interest in acquiring a majority stake, with the Italian government retaining a minority share. By 2025, Lufthansa’s investment led to ITA Airways’ integration into the Lufthansa Group, prompting its exit from the SkyTeam alliance on April 30, 2025, with plans to join Star Alliance in 2026. This strategic shift aims to enhance its global reach and operational synergies.
ITA Airways operates a network of over 70 destinations across 22 countries, focusing on domestic Italian routes, European cities, and intercontinental connections. Its primary hub, Rome Fiumicino, handles all long-haul flights, with Milan Linate serving as a focus city for domestic and short-haul routes. Key destinations include:
