ITA Airways Baggage Policy

ITA Airways Baggage Policy Overview
Carry-On Baggage:
  • All Classes: One carry-on bag, max 8 kg (17 lbs), dimensions up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.6 x 13.8 x 9.8 in, including handles, wheels, and side pockets). Must fit in overhead bin.
  • Personal Item: One additional item (e.g., handbag, laptop bag, small backpack), max 40 x 30 x 15 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 in), must fit under the seat. Small items (max 36 x 45 x 20 cm) require an “Under the Seat” label from ground staff.
  • Infants (under 2 years): No separate carry-on allowance; items count toward accompanying adult’s allowance.
  • Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs): Containers up to 100 ml in a 1-liter transparent, resealable plastic bag (total volume not exceeding 1 liter).
  • Notes: On high-load flights (except intercontinental), carry-on may be gate-checked free of charge with a reclaim receipt. Strict size/weight checks at check-in or gate, especially at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) or Milan (MXP). Anecdotal reports suggest occasional leniency for slightly oversized bags (e.g., 22 x 14 x 9 in), but 8 kg weight limit is strictly enforced. Overweight/oversized carry-on is checked into the hold for €60–€100 (~$65–$110 USD).
Checked Baggage:
  • Max Limits: Each bag up to 158 cm (62 in, length + width + height), 23 kg (50 lbs) for Economy/Comfort Economy or 32 kg (70 lbs) for Premium Economy/Business. Bags over 32 kg or 300 cm (118 in) not accepted; must be shipped via cargo.
  • Children (2 years and above): Same allowance as adults.
  • Infants (under 2 years): 1 piece, 10 kg (max 115 cm), plus one stroller or car seat free.
Special Baggage:
  • Sports Equipment (e.g., skis, golf bags, surfboards): Counts toward free allowance if within limits; otherwise, €30–€150 (~$33–$165 USD) per item, max 23 kg (32 kg with excess fee), 300 cm. Small equipment (e.g., skis, snorkel gear) may be free if replacing a checked bag. Must be pre-booked and packed in rigid containers.
  • Musical Instruments: Small instruments (max 115 cm) replace carry-on. Larger instruments checked (standard fees) or require an extra seat (contact Customer Center).
  • Weapons/Ammunition: Not included in allowance, max 20 kg weapons, 5 kg ammunition, fees €50–€200 (~$55–$220 USD). Requires registration at check-in and police/customs clearance, especially in Italy. Temporarily suspended to/from UK.
  • Pets: Assistance dogs free in cabin. Other pets in cargo hold (max 75 kg including crate), fees €100–€300 (~$110–$330 USD). Requires 7-day advance booking, pet passport, and health certificate.
  • Fragile/Large Items (e.g., wedding gowns, artwork): Cabin transport requires seat purchase; otherwise, checked with Limited Liability Waiver.
Prohibited Items:
  • Checked Baggage: Explosives, flammable liquids/gases, corrosives, lithium battery-powered devices (e.g., hoverboards), loose batteries (>160 Wh).
  • Carry-On Baggage: Sharp objects, firearms, e-cigarettes, liquids over 100 ml, blunt objects usable as weapons. Medical syringes allowed with doctor’s certificate.
  • Notes: Check destination-specific restrictions (e.g., Viaggiare Sicuri for Italy). Flowers/gifts (up to 1 kg, 115 cm) carried free.
Lost, Damaged, or Delayed Baggage:
  • Reporting: File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport within 7 days (damage/loss) or 21 days (delay).
  • Liability: Max 1,288 Special Drawing Rights (~$1,800 USD) per Montreal Convention, unless value declared (€50 per bag for €500 coverage). No liability for fragile/perishable items.
  • Notes: For connections, reclaim baggage at first entry point for customs (e.g., Italy, U.S.). X posts report inconsistent claim handling; retain all receipts/documents.
Additional Notes:
  • Codeshare/Interline Flights: Operating carrier’s policy applies for the first segment. For U.S. routes, the marketing carrier’s policy (ticket code) applies per U.S. DOT/CTA.
  • Strictness: ITA enforces 8 kg carry-on limit strictly, with checks at check-in/gate. Slightly oversized bags (e.g., 22 x 14 x 9 in) may be allowed if under 8 kg, but not guaranteed. Business class may offer leniency.
  • Volare Program: Smart/Plus/Premium/Executive members may get extra allowances. SkyTeam Elite/Elite Plus receive one extra piece.
