Jet2.com Limited, commonly known as Jet2, is a leading British low-cost airline and a key component of Jet2 plc, a multinational leisure travel group headquartered in Leeds, England. Founded in 2002, Jet2 has grown from a regional cargo operator into the UK’s third-largest scheduled airline and the country’s largest tour operator, overtaking TUI in 2023. With its main base at Leeds Bradford Airport, Jet2 operates from 13 UK airports and three overseas bases, serving over 80 destinations across Europe, including sun-soaked Mediterranean spots, the Canary Islands, and European leisure cities. Its commitment to “Friendly Low Fares” and exceptional customer service has earned it numerous accolades, including TripAdvisor’s Best Airline – UK and Which? Travel Brand of the Year.
Jet2’s origins trace back to 1971 when Art Carpenter established Carpenter’s Air Services Ltd to transport flowers from Guernsey to the UK mainland, alongside Carpenter’s Transport for distribution. These ventures evolved into Channel Express, a cargo and mail carrier, which began operations in 1983 under the ownership of the Dart Group (now Jet2 plc). In 2001, the company acquired Boeing 737-300QC “Quick Change” aircraft, capable of switching between passenger and freight configurations, marking its pivot to passenger services. On February 12, 2003, Jet2 launched its first passenger flight from Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam, initially focusing on budget flights from northern England due to a gap in the low-cost market.
By 2006, the company relocated its headquarters from Bournemouth to Leeds and rebranded as Jet2.com Limited. The airline expanded rapidly, opening bases at Manchester (2004), Newcastle (2005), Blackpool, Edinburgh, and Belfast International, among others. In 2008, it dropped its original slogan, “The North’s Low Cost Airline,” for “Friendly Low Fares” to reflect its growing network, including its first hub outside northern England at East Midlands Airport. The launch of Jet2holidays in 2007 further diversified its offerings, providing package holidays that combine flights with over 5,000 contracted hotels. By 2011, Jet2 introduced Indulgent Escapes, a premium holiday brand, and later Jet2CityBreaks and Jet2Villas, catering to varied traveler preferences.
Jet2 operates from 13 UK bases: Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast International, East Midlands, London Stansted, Bristol, Liverpool John Lennon, Bournemouth, and London Luton. It also maintains overseas bases in Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, and Tenerife South. The airline serves over 80 destinations across 22 countries, focusing on leisure travel to sun, city, and ski destinations, including Majorca, Tenerife, Rome, Prague, and Athens. In 2023, Jet2 carried over 17 million passengers, operating more than 100,000 flights, a significant leap from its 5,542 flights in 2003.
The fleet, exceeding 100 aircraft as of September 2023, primarily consists of Boeing 737-800NGs, with 34 new units delivered since 2003. In a strategic shift, Jet2 placed a landmark order for 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft in 2021, with deliveries ongoing to support its growing network. The airline previously operated Boeing 757-200s for medium-long haul routes, including seasonal flights to New York from 2008 to 2019, but these were retired post-COVID due to the A321neo’s limited range for transatlantic routes.
