Juneyao Air, headquartered in Changning, Shanghai, China, is a full-service carrier and a key subsidiary of Shanghai Juneyao (Group) Co., Ltd. Founded in 2005, the airline commenced operations in September 2006 and has since grown into a significant player in China’s competitive aviation market. Operating from its primary hubs at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), with a secondary hub in Nanjing, Juneyao Air serves over 300 routes, connecting more than 220 destinations across Asia, Europe, and Oceania. As of February 2025, the airline operates a modern fleet of 128 aircraft and is a Star Alliance Connecting Partner, enhancing its global reach through codeshare agreements with airlines like ANA, Air China, EVA Air, Finnair, and Shenzhen Airlines. Juneyao Air is committed to its “Safe and Smooth Journey Home” philosophy, offering high-value services (HVC) to mid-to-high-end passengers.
Juneyao Air was established in 2005 as a subsidiary of Shanghai Juneyao (Group) Co., Ltd, a modern service enterprise founded in 1991. The airline’s first flight took off in September 2006 from Shanghai to Changsha, marking the realization of Chairman Wang Junjin’s vision to build a century-old international service company. By 2013, Juneyao had expanded its fleet to 35 Airbus A320s and its network to over 50 cities. The airline went public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in May 2015 (603885.SH), solidifying its financial foundation. In 2017, it became the first Star Alliance Connecting Partner, boosting connectivity for Star Alliance members, particularly in Shanghai. The introduction of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in October 2018 marked its entry into long-haul markets, with routes to Helsinki (2018) and Athens (2019). Despite the global pandemic, Juneyao continued its expansion, launching 9 Air, a low-cost subsidiary, in 2014, and announcing a Hainan-based airline project with China Eastern Airlines in 2020 (pending regulatory approval).
In 2023, Juneyao Group diversified into the automotive sector by acquiring Yudo, a financially troubled startup, to form Juneyao Automobile. This move aligns with its “Juneyao Journey” ecosystem, integrating air and land travel services. The airline has also embraced China’s “Dual Carbon” strategy, focusing on sustainability through fuel-efficient aircraft and digital innovations.
Juneyao Air operates a comprehensive network of over 300 routes, with a focus on domestic Chinese cities and short-haul international destinations in Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia. Long-haul routes include Helsinki, Athens, Melbourne, Sydney, and Manchester, with plans for expansion to Brussels, Cairo, and Vladivostok, though some deliveries of Boeing 787-9s were delayed in 2025 due to US-China trade tensions. The airline’s hubs in Shanghai and Nanjing facilitate efficient connectivity, complemented by codeshare agreements with Star Alliance members like ANA, Air China, EVA Air, Finnair, and Shenzhen Airlines. Juneyao’s strategy prioritizes profitable routes, aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative for untapped markets in Europe, Africa, and North America.
