Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commonly known as Lufthansa, is Germany’s flag carrier and one of the world’s largest airlines, headquartered in Cologne, Germany. Founded in 1926 and re-established in 1953, Lufthansa operates from its primary hubs at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC), serving over 220 destinations across 78 countries in Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East. As a founding member of the Star Alliance since 1997, Lufthansa is part of the Lufthansa Group, which includes subsidiaries like Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings. With a fleet of 773 aircraft, Lufthansa carried 145 million passengers in 2024, generating €38.9 billion in revenue. Known for its German precision, premium service, and sustainability focus, Lufthansa offers First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins, earning a Skytrax 5-Star Airline rating (2017–2024) and the title of Europe’s Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards (2024). Its slogan, “Say yes to the world,” reflects its global connectivity and customer-centric approach.
Founded on January 6, 1926, Lufthansa began with Junkers F13 aircraft, merging Deutsche Aero Lloyd and Junkers Luftverkehr. Suspended during World War II, it relaunched in 1953, flying Convair 340s. The jet age arrived with Boeing 707s in 1960, followed by 747s in 1970. Lufthansa pioneered computer reservations in the 1960s and co-founded Star Alliance in 1997. The 2005 acquisition of Swiss and 2009 mergers with Austrian and Brussels Airlines formed the Lufthansa Group. Despite a €6.7 billion loss in 2020 due to COVID-19, Lufthansa recovered with a €1.7 billion profit in 2023, launching Allegris cabins and new routes like Munich–Johannesburg in 2024.
Lufthansa operates from Frankfurt (Terminal 1) and Munich (Terminal 2), serving 220 destinations, including 60 in Europe (e.g., Paris, London), 30 in Asia (e.g., Tokyo, Delhi), 20 in North America (e.g., New York, Los Angeles), and routes to Africa (Nairobi, Cape Town) and South America (São Paulo). It operates 3,500 weekly flights with an 87% load factor. Codeshares with Star Alliance partners like United and ANA, plus non-alliance carriers like LATAM, extend reach to 1,300 destinations. Lufthansa Cargo, with 17 freighters, transports 1.2 million tonnes annually, specializing in pharmaceuticals.
