Lufthansa Name Change Policy

Overview

Lufthansa Airlines allows minor name corrections on tickets to fix spelling errors or update names due to legal reasons, ensuring the name matches the passenger’s government-issued identification, such as a passport or ID card. Full name changes to transfer tickets to another person are not permitted for individual reservations, as tickets are non-transferable. Corrections are subject to specific conditions and fees, with only one correction per ticket allowed. For group bookings, name changes are permitted under certain conditions.

Eligibility for Name Corrections
  • Minor Spelling Errors: Corrections of up to two characters in the first, middle, or last name are permitted to fix typos, typically free if requested promptly for flights operated by Lufthansa or its partners (e.g., Air Dolomiti, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss, SWISS).
  • Legal Name Changes: Changes due to marriage, divorce, gender reassignment, or other legal reasons are allowed with supporting documentation, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order, often free even after ticket issuance.
  • Title or Suffix: Adding, deleting, or changing titles (e.g., Mr. to Ms.) or suffixes (e.g., Jr.) is permitted, typically free, but may require ticket reissuance in the same or available class with applicable fare differences.
  • Middle Names: Adding or correcting a middle name to match the passport is allowed, typically free if requested early.
  • Non-Transferable Tickets: Individual reservations cannot be transferred to another person. For group bookings of ten or more passengers, name changes are free before ticket issuance, typically a few weeks before departure, but incur a fee afterward.
  • Eligible Flights: Corrections apply only to flights with an LH flight number operated by Lufthansa or its specified partners. Mixed PNRs with other airlines’ segments are not eligible for Lufthansa’s name correction policy.
Process for Name Corrections

Name corrections can be requested through the following methods:

  • Online: Visit the Manage Booking section on the Lufthansa website or app. Log in with your Travel ID or enter the booking code and last name, select the booking, and follow prompts to correct minor typos. Documentation for legal changes must be submitted separately.
  • Customer Support: Contact Lufthansa’s Customer Service via phone or email with booking details and supporting documents. This is required for legal name changes or corrections exceeding two characters.
  • Airport Counter: Visit a Lufthansa check-in counter at the airport with valid ID and documentation. Corrections may be processed before check-in, but fees may apply, and availability is not guaranteed.
  • Third-Party Bookings: For tickets booked through travel agencies, changes must be requested through the original booking channel, which may involve additional fees.
Fees and Conditions
  • Minor corrections of up to two characters are free if requested promptly after booking for tickets purchased directly from Lufthansa or its partners.
  • Corrections exceeding two characters or requested after ticket issuance incur a fee, typically a significant amount per person, plus any fare difference if the ticket is reissued in a different class.
  • For group bookings, name changes after ticket issuance incur a fee per person, typically a moderate amount, but are free before issuance.
  • Corrections are not permitted after check-in, for partially used tickets, or for changes to passenger type (e.g., adult to child).
  • For codeshare or interline flights not operated by Lufthansa or its specified partners, the operating carrier’s policy applies.
Important Notes
  • Passengers must provide valid identification (e.g., passport, ID card) and legal documents for corrections, particularly for legal name changes.
  • The name on the ticket must match the government-issued ID exactly to avoid boarding or immigration issues, especially for international flights.
  • Requests should be made as early as possible to avoid fees and ensure processing, ideally within a short period after booking for free corrections.
  • For third-party bookings, coordination with the agency is critical, as Lufthansa may not process changes directly.
  • Contact Lufthansa’s Customer Service or visit the official website for the latest policy details and fee information.
