Neos S.p.A., operating as Neos Air, is a private Italian airline headquartered in Somma Lombardo, Lombardy, and a subsidiary of Alpitour S.p.A., Italy’s largest tour operator. Established on June 22, 2001, and commencing operations on March 8, 2002, Neos specializes in leisure travel, connecting Italy to over 85 destinations across Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Caribbean. Operating from its main base at Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and secondary bases at Verona (VRN), Bologna (BLQ), and Rome Fiumicino (FCO), Neos serves holiday hotspots like the Canary Islands, Maldives, Cuba, and Egypt, alongside year-round routes such as Milan–New York (JFK). With a fleet of 18 Boeing aircraft, including 787-9 Dreamliners, Neos carried approximately 2 million passengers in 2024, generating €777 million in revenue. Known for its Italian hospitality, modern amenities, and competitive pricing, Neos holds a Skytrax 4-Star rating (2023) but faces criticism for inconsistent service and customer support.
Neos began as a joint venture between Alpitour and TUI Group, launching its first revenue flight on March 8, 2002. In 2004, Alpitour acquired TUI’s shares, making Neos a wholly owned subsidiary. The fleet grew to six aircraft by 2011, introducing Boeing 737-800s for short-haul routes. In 2014, Neos ordered three Boeing 787-8s, later converted to four 787-9s delivered in 2020, with two more from Norwegian Air International, enabling long-haul expansion. The Milan–New York (JFK) route launched in 2021, followed by Milan–Bari–New York in 2024. A 2019 data breach exposed passenger data, prompting enhanced cybersecurity. Despite COVID-19 disruptions, Neos resumed full operations by 2022, adding routes like Milan–Tashkent and Verona–Dubai. Plans for 2025 include €850 million in revenue and a fleet expansion to 20 aircraft.
Neos operates from Milan Malpensa (Terminal 1), with secondary bases at Verona, Bologna, and Rome. Its network spans over 85 destinations: 10 domestic (e.g., Cagliari, Catania), 30 European (e.g., Ibiza, Rhodes, Iceland), and 45 intercontinental, including Cuba, Maldives, Kenya, Mexico, and New York (JFK). Key routes include Milan–New York (95 weekly flights) and seasonal services to Tanzania, Jamaica, and Vietnam. Neos operates 500 weekly flights with an 85% load factor. No global alliance membership limits codeshares, but partnerships with easyJet and APG facilitate bookings. Cargo services focus on passenger luggage, with minor freight via Lion Parcel. On-time performance averages 82%, though delays are noted.
