Southwest Airlines was founded on March 15, 1967, as Air Southwest Co. by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King to provide low-cost, intrastate air travel in Texas. Facing legal battles from competitors, the airline rebranded as Southwest Airlines and launched its first flight on June 18, 1971, between Dallas Love Field (DAL), Houston, and San Antonio using three Boeing 737-200s. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) imposed a $140 million fine in 2023, the largest in its history, prompting Southwest to invest $1.3 billion in technology upgrades, including a new crew scheduling system by 2025. Southwest operates a fleet of 803 Boeing 737 aircraft (as of October 2024), including 737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX 8 models, with an average age of 10.1 years. The airline is the world’s largest operator of the Boeing 737, with 205 737 MAX 8s and orders for over 300 additional MAX variants. The 737 MAX offers up to 14% better fuel efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and aligning with Southwest’s sustainability goals. The fleet features a single Economy Class cabin with optional “Wanna Get Away Plus” and “Business Select” fares offering extra legroom and priority boarding. Southwest’s environmental initiatives include a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, with investments in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and operational efficiencies like single-engine taxiing.
