Sunrise Airways is a Haitian regional airline headquartered in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, dedicated to connecting the Caribbean through safe, affordable, and reliable air travel. Founded in 2010, it operates from its primary hub at Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP) and a secondary hub at Hugo Chávez International Airport (CAP) in Cap-Haïtien. As a privately owned carrier, Sunrise Airways serves 13 destinations across 7 countries, focusing on the Caribbean with scheduled and charter flights. With a fleet of Embraer and ATR aircraft, a commitment to sustainability, and a vision of "One Caribbean," the airline fosters regional connectivity and cultural exchange. Despite its growth, Sunrise faces challenges with customer service, operational reliability, and regulatory hurdles, particularly with suspended Cuba routes, but continues to expand under new leadership.
Sunrise Airways was founded in 2010 as a Haitian-owned commercial airline, launching operations in November 2012 with a mission to enhance air travel within the Western Caribbean. Its first scheduled service began in December 2012, offering two daily flights between Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien. In 2014, the airline expanded internationally with its first scheduled passenger service to Cuba on October 30, operating twice-weekly flights to Havana and Santiago de Cuba. In mid-2015, Sunrise acquired Dominican-based Aerolíneas Mas, enabling a shift from charter to scheduled services between Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo. That year, it also received a permit from the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, facilitating further expansion.
In 2016, Sunrise added a 46-seat ATR 42-320 to its fleet, enhancing regional connectivity. In 2017, the airline introduced a Boeing 737-300 (later retired) and an Airbus A320 with a two-class configuration, marking its first foray into premium seating. By October 2017, Sunrise launched routes to Orlando and Miami from Port-au-Prince, strengthening ties with the U.S. In 2024, the airline announced Antigua as a hub for Eastern Caribbean expansion, adding four new destinations: Dominica, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. As of June 2025, Sunrise operates over 100 weekly flights but has temporarily suspended Cuba services due to pending Cuban government approvals. Posts on X confirm the resumption of domestic flights between Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes, and Jérémie starting June 12, 2025, following an agreement with the Haitian government.
In June 2025, Sunrise appointed Gary Stone, former Vice President at Sabre Corporation, as CEO, signaling a focus on growth and service enhancement. The airline’s codeshare with Cubana de Aviación and interline agreements with Hahn Air and Air Caraïbes expand its network reach.
As of January 2024, Sunrise Airways operates a fleet of 10 aircraft, primarily Embraer ERJ-145s and ATR 42-320s, suited for short-haul Caribbean routes. The Embraer jets seat 50 passengers, while the ATR 42-320s accommodate 46, with select aircraft offering a two-class configuration (Economy and a small premium section). The fleet’s average age is approximately 15 years, maintained to meet rigorous safety standards. The retirement of a Boeing 737-300 in 2018 reflects a shift to smaller, fuel-efficient aircraft better suited for regional operations.
Sunrise prioritizes environmental responsibility, targeting a reduced ecological footprint by 2025 through initiatives like minimizing single-use plastics, managing onboard and ground waste, and optimizing flight routes for fuel efficiency. Its partnership with Haiti National Trust and Audubon Haiti supports biodiversity conservation in Grand Bois National Park, emphasizing sustainable development.
