Swoop Airlines Baggage Policy (Historical - 2023)
Note: Swoop Airlines ceased operations on October 29, 2023, and merged with WestJet. The following reflects Swoop’s baggage policy as of 2023.
Carry-On Baggage Allowance
Swoop Airlines allowed one free personal item per passenger. A carry-on bag for the overhead bin incurred a fee, which varied by flight distance and purchase time.

- Carry-on bags must fit in the sizing device at check-in or the gate.
- Fees increase by $2 during peak seasons (June 29–September 4, 2023; December 15, 2023–January 3, 2024).
- US departures are charged in USD equivalent.
Checked Baggage Allowance
Swoop charged for all checked bags, with fees varying by flight distance, number of bags, and purchase time. A maximum of four checked bags per passenger was allowed.

- Bags exceeding 23 kg (up to 45 kg) or 157 cm (up to 203 cm) incur an additional fee of $105–$115 CAD/USD.
- Bags over 45 kg or 203 cm are not accepted.
- Fees increase by $2 during peak seasons (June 29–September 4, 2023; December 15, 2023–January 3, 2024).
- Active Canadian military members: Up to two checked bags and one carry-on free with a valid ID.
- Premium Class passengers: One free checked bag.
- Fees are non-refundable unless baggage is lost or damaged.
Special Baggage
Sports Equipment
Sports equipment (e.g., skis, snowboards, bicycles) was accepted as checked baggage with regular fees if within weight/size limits.
- Skis: One pair of skis, poles, boots, and helmet (or separate boot bag). Oversize fee waived; overweight fee ($105–$115) applies if over 23 kg.
- Bicycles: Must be packed flat in a bag/box, tires partially deflated, pedals removed, handlebars aligned, max 118 in. One per traveler.
- Regular baggage fees apply unless exceeding limits.
Musical Instruments
Small instruments could be carried as a personal item or carry-on if within size limits. Larger instruments required checking or an extra seat purchase.
- Checked instruments: Subject to standard checked baggage fees and size/weight restrictions.
- Contact Swoop in advance for oversized instruments.
Pets
Swoop allowed small pets in the cabin for a fee, subject to space and regulations.
- Fee: $50–$100 CAD/USD per way, depending on route.
- Pets counted as the carry-on item, with a carrier fitting under the seat (41 x 15 x 33 cm).
- Health certificates and documentation required.
Prohibited Items
Certain items were restricted or prohibited for safety reasons.
- Carry-on: Liquids over 100 ml, sharp objects, flammable items.
- Checked: Loose lithium batteries, hazardous materials.
Lost, Damaged, or Delayed Baggage
Swoop followed Canadian Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) for baggage issues.
- Delayed: Report to a Swoop agent within 7 days of arrival. File a claim within 21 days. Interim expenses: Up to $100 CAD/USD for the first 48 hours, $250 total thereafter.
- Damaged: Report within 7 days at the airport with the damaged bag for assessment.
- Lost: File a claim within 21 days. Compensation up to 1,288 SDR under Montreal Convention.
Additional Notes
- Check-in: Online 24 hours to 60 minutes before departure; airport check-in closes 45 minutes (domestic) or 60 minutes (international) before departure.
- Baggage fees were cheaper when purchased online during booking compared to check-in or airport.
- Swoop’s strict enforcement of size/weight limits was noted, with no leniency for overages.
- Assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs, strollers) were exempt from fees.
