Overview
Volaris, a Mexican ultra-low-cost airline, allows minor name corrections and full name changes to transfer tickets to another person, except for certain fare types. The policy ensures the name on the ticket matches the traveler’s passport or government-issued ID for security and compliance purposes. Name changes must be requested before check-in and are subject to fees, with additional flexibility for group bookings and v.club or v.empresa members.
Key Policy Details
- Minor name corrections, such as fixing typos or adjusting name order in the first, middle, or last name, are permitted, typically up to a few characters, to align with the traveler’s passport or ID. These corrections are free if requested within a short period after booking, usually a day, for tickets purchased directly through Volaris, provided the departure is at least a few days away.
- Full name changes to transfer a ticket to another person are allowed for most fare types, except Zero fare tickets, for a fee per passenger per segment, plus any fare difference if the new ticket is more expensive. No refunds are issued if the new fare is lower.
- Legal name changes, such as those due to marriage or divorce, are permitted with supporting documents like a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Fees may apply depending on fare type and timing.
- Name changes are only permitted for Volaris-operated flights (ticket numbers starting with 036) and not for codeshare flights or flights operated by partner airlines, unless specified in the booking agreement.
- Bookings made through travel agents or third-party platforms must have name changes processed through the original booking provider, not directly with Volaris.
- The name on the ticket must exactly match the traveler’s passport or ID, using Latin characters without special symbols, to avoid boarding issues, especially for international flights to destinations like Los Angeles, Bogotá, or Cancun. For group bookings, passenger names must be submitted a few days before departure, including full name, date of birth, and nationality as per the passport.
- Name changes or corrections are not permitted after check-in, within a few hours of departure, if the flight has begun and the passenger was a no-show, if only partial payment was made, or for changes from an adult to a minor or unaccompanied elderly person.
- Group bookings allow name changes for up to a portion of passengers a few days before departure for a reduced fee, typically lower for domestic flights than international ones. v.empresa members receive one free name change per ticket, and v.club group members can change companion names with a fee.
How to Make Name Changes or Corrections
Name changes or corrections can be made through the following methods:
- Online: Visit the Volaris website, access the My Trips section, enter the booking reference and last name, select the option to edit passenger details, make the correction or name change, upload required documents if needed, and pay any applicable fees. A confirmation email with the updated ticket will be sent.
- Customer Service: Contact Volaris customer support via phone, WhatsApp, or social media, provide the booking reference and passenger details, request the correction or name change, and submit necessary documents, such as a passport or marriage certificate. Fees may apply, and a confirmation email will be sent upon completion.
- In-Person: Visit a Volaris ticket counter or kiosk at the airport at least a few hours before departure, provide the booking reference and identification documents, and request the correction or name change. Fees may apply, and a confirmation email will be sent.
- Travel Agency: For bookings made through a travel agency, contact the agency directly to request the correction or name change, provide required documents, and pay any applicable fees. The agency will coordinate with Volaris.
Important Notes
- Name changes or corrections must be requested at least a few hours before departure, ideally as soon as the error is noticed, as changes are not permitted after check-in or once the journey has started. For group bookings, names must be finalized a few days before departure.
- Fees for name changes vary by fare type, route, and channel, with lower fees for online requests compared to call center or airport requests. Minor corrections within a short grace period may be free for eligible fares if departure is at least a week away. Additional fare differences apply if the new ticket is more expensive.
- Passengers must ensure the name matches their passport or ID exactly, particularly for international flights, to comply with security regulations. For passengers with single names or names exceeding character limits, specific formatting rules apply, and assistance from customer service may be needed.
- For legal name changes, original or certified copies of supporting documents must be provided for verification.
- Passengers with bookings through third-party platforms should contact their booking agent promptly, as Volaris may not process changes directly for such reservations.
- The Flexibility Combo, if purchased, may offer additional benefits like unlimited date or time changes, but name change fees still apply unless covered by v.empresa membership.
