About Vueling Airlines

A Quick Overview of Vueling Airlines

Vueling Airlines, officially Vueling Airlines S.A., is a Spanish low-cost carrier and one of Europe’s leading budget airlines, known for its extensive network connecting major and secondary cities across the continent. Founded in February 2004, Vueling is headquartered at El Prat de Llobregat, near Barcelona, and operates its primary hub at Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), with additional bases in Madrid, Bilbao, Florence, Lisbon, Paris (Orly), and Rome. As a subsidiary of International Airlines Group (IAG), which also owns British Airways and Iberia, Vueling serves over 100 destinations in 26 countries across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. With a fleet of 125 Airbus A320-family aircraft, averaging 8 years in age, the airline carried 34.6 million passengers in 2023, generating €2.84 billion in revenue. Vueling’s focus on affordability, punctuality, and customer-centric digital services aligns with its slogan, “We love places, we love,” emphasizing its passion for connecting people and destinations. Recognized as a Top 20 Low-Cost Carrier by AirlineRatings.com in 2024, Vueling continues to expand its network and enhance its offerings while maintaining a commitment to sustainability.

History and Milestones

Vueling was established in 2004 by a group of investors, including Apax Partners and Inversiones Hemisferio (Planeta Group), with its inaugural flight from Barcelona to Ibiza on July 1, 2004, using an Airbus A320. The airline rapidly expanded, launching international routes to Paris and Brussels by 2005 and going public on the Madrid Stock Exchange in 2006. In 2008, Vueling merged with Clickair, a low-cost subsidiary of Iberia, strengthening its position in Spain. IAG acquired Vueling in 2013 for €123.5 million, integrating it into its portfolio while maintaining its independent brand.

Key milestones include becoming Spain’s leading low-cost carrier by 2010, surpassing Ryanair in passenger numbers at Barcelona. In 2015, Vueling launched Vueling Global, an interline platform connecting 150 destinations with partners like Qatar Airways. The airline navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with a €260 million recapitalization from IAG, resuming growth in 2021. In 2023, Vueling carried 34.6 million passengers, a 15% increase from 2022, and added routes like Barcelona–Tromsø and Bilbao–Porto. In 2024, it introduced a codeshare with easyJet, enhancing UK–Spain connectivity, and celebrated its 20th anniversary with plans for 10 new routes in 2025.

Fleet

Vueling operates a fleet of 125 Airbus A320-family aircraft as of Q1 2025, comprising:

  • Airbus A320ceo/neo: 180 seats, used for short- and medium-haul routes.
  • Airbus A321ceo/neo: 220–236 seats, deployed on high-demand routes like Barcelona–Madrid.

The fleet’s average age of 8 years ensures fuel efficiency and reliability. Vueling has orders for 30 A320neo-family aircraft, aiming to expand to 150 planes by 2030. Maintenance is managed by IAG’s Iberia MRO division, with facilities in Barcelona and Madrid, adhering to EASA standards. The all-Airbus strategy reduces operating costs, supporting Vueling’s low-cost model.
